Introduction

When Jen & I first got together, about 2 years ago, I took her for a wee spin, about 10 minutes, to see if she liked being on a motorbike. After that run she said ‘that’s great, maybe we can go to Morocco’. 20 months and 1 wedding later, we headed off. This report details the route and stopovers we made from leaving home, right through to our return 17 days later.

The route we took through Morocco was courtesy of Tim Cullis on the Horizons Unlimited website. He identified the route as a good start for first-time Morocco travellers and he seems to have done a good job.

Some stages were longer than others, but were all do-able in one day. Leaving at 8am each day, we arrived at our destinations at anytime between 12 noon and 6pm. It led us from the North, through the Atlas Mountains, into the Sahara desert then up the Atlantic coast, with several backtracking days.

In the cities, the roads were of a fairly good standard, smooth tarmac. Out in the wilds, however, there was a wide variety. Some open roads were smooth and flat, while others were badly in need of repair. This is especially true in the desert, however, I found it fairly irrelevant, given I was riding through the Sahara. Riding through towns, even if the road seems to be sound, keep alert in case a pothole jumps in front of you.

Introduction

Mountain sections vary too, some with a full 2 lane carriageway, properly finished with white lines, yet others were little more than gravel on a solid base. These were mostly free of barriers to a very steep drop. There are other tracks, known as ‘pistes’, which have no solid base, so we kept clear of these, apart from a couple of short trips, but other riders used them successfully.

We armed ourselves for the trip with a pannier of clothes each, with the topbox and tankbag jammed full. As well as the obvious and spares for the bike, we took the Rough Guide to Morocco, to help us look for accommodation and read up on places before we got there. Unfortunately, we found out on around day 3 in Morocco that our copy was way out of date, but most of it was still valid.
